Interview with Desmond Beaulah

We had the pleasure of interviewing Desmond Beaulah, Owner and creator of H.U.S.T.L.E Clothing brand.
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us the story behind H.U.S.T.L.E and its creation?
Well, the story behind me and my hustle that led me to create this brand a lot of people don’t really know. It started in 2002 when my house burnt down on Christmas Eve and my family lost everything we ever owned thats when I truly learned the definition of hustle. I watched my mom cry so many nights trying to provide for her three kids over the years to come after that and you know, I never wanted her to have to really worry about me and making sure I was good. So from the age of about 14 on she never did and she will tell you that til this day. Fast forward 2016 I was doing pretty good for myself but I made some stupid decisions financially and did a few things that literally cost me everything I had made over the years. At this point in my life my bank account had been over drafted like 4 times I was in the red, no savings, debt to the roof, car starting to fail me, and not to mention a four year old child and also paying child support. At this point I’m in my mid twenties and was just living my best life and literally in the blink of an eye I was at rock bottom. But remember, I had seen what it was like to have nothing growing up and watched my mom make something out of nothing. True enough I was stressed the hell out and at a point of thinking I couldn’t bounce back but I just knew I just had to, especially for my daughter. It took me about a year or so but I made it up out that hole and it was mostly through entrepreneurship/hustling, no job. I made well over five figures in my first eight months. At this point while still working on myself I also started mentoring others and helping other people get through their struggle when they think its impossible. When I first had the idea of creating this brand Hustle Clothing I thought to myself this is what I am, this is truly what I do. I really just wanted to reach more people who look like me and come from similar backgrounds and situations, even if they don’t, I wanted to show people that no matter what happens you won’t be down forever as long as you have a little hustle, thats really all it takes. Notice I have every letter in the word hustle separated by periods thats because every letter of that word holds weight and means something to me, without it man theres no telling where I would be right now.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your company?
The most interesting things that have happened to me since I started my company honestly is just being able to reach people and help them make it through their situations. It makes me feel amazing when I get a phone call or a message from someone saying that because of me they made it through or I motivated/helped them make enough money to leave a job they hated. I get messages daily from all over the world from Georgia to Cali to Africa, and that is whats most interesting to me.
Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
Haha, I don’t think its necessarily funny but definitely a lesson I can laugh about because I know it’s apart of the game. There was one time I got three boxes of merchandise produced that I didn’t like anymore once they arrived. The lesson I learned from that was not to act so fast and get samples made first. My whole thing is quality over quantity and if I wouldn’t wear it I’m not putting it out to the public. But thats growing pains that come with the business.
What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?
I don’t really have a story but I do have testimony from customers and people I mentor and talk to on a daily that let me know I’m not like the rest. What I think makes my company stand out is that I am what I am period. I am my company I am the brand, Hustle. Its real, genuine and relatable and its a quality brand. Thats what separates me from a lot of other people just putting stuff out for a quick dollar, I truly care about my customers and reaching them at the end of the day. The whole point of the company is to help/motivate others to hustle no matter what it is. Sports, work, business, school, stripping, whatever you do hustle for everything you want and never let anything stop it or hold you down no matter how dark it gets!
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
To anybody else getting into this industry or any other business venture for that matter, I suggest you have a “WHY” so you don’t get burned out easily. By “WHY” I mean why are you doing what you are doing? My why at this point is my daughter, if I ever give up on what I start that’ll be like me sitting down in front of her telling her I give up on her. Always have a “WHY” I promise it’ll keep you going.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
I teamed up with an organization thats helps provide meals for the homeless and every single purchase that is made a percentage goes to feeding the less fortunate, I know what it’s like to not know if you’re goin to eat a meal later or the next day so there is no better feeling in the world than to be able to bring a little peace of mind to someone less fortunate and little positivity to it, especially in today’s time.
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
My favorite life lesson quote that is most relevant to my life is “it gotta be in you not on you” … Like I said earlier the hustle is me, in order to make it through my situations it had to be in me, if it wasn’t engraved in me the way it was I never would of made it out the deep end, straight up. But now I wear it on me too and thats my brand.
You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂
If I could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people it would be to bring everybody who’s in so much competition with everyone else together to do something much greater than themselves and do something that brings a light to their community as a whole and not just themselves. Like I always say if you hustling for just yourself then you hustling wrong. Help the people around you and we can all win together.
